No applause. Just opinions.

It is official, Bartolo Colon will not be a starter for the Yankees.

The Yanks tabbed Freddy Garcia as their #5 and Ivan SuperNova as their #4. Garcia swiped the spot from Colon, many would say. Colon pitched better than Garcia in spring training, but in reality that really didn’t mean anything.

Freddy Garcia Spring Training 2011:
1-1, 5.93 ERA, 13 hits and 9ER in 13 2/3 IP. 12K, 2BB, opponent’s batting average of .250, and 1.10 WHIP.

Bartolo Colon Spring Training 2011:
1-0, 2.40 ERA, 10 hits, 17 K’s, 1BB in 15IP, opponent’s batting average of .192, and 0.73 WHIP.

If I had the guess, the reason that Freddy was chosen over Bartolo was just based on the fact that Bartolo hasn’t pitched in the majors for a couple of years, whereas Freddy was 12-6 last year. I personally think the Yankees made the right decision because let’s be honest here, Bartolo is quite obese and probably can’t make anything near 30 healthy starts this year. Not that it really matters because I believe the #5 spot will eventually go to newly signed Kevin Millwood. I see the Yanks #5 spot as an ever-changing spot on the active roster this year.

Oh, the rollercoaster that is the Yankees starting rotation… What do you think about Girardi’s decision? What would you do in this same situation?
