I attended last nights game in the Bronx – Yankees vs White Sox. There were some questionable decisions by Girardi, but worst of all Soriano sucked, again. The highly acclaimed Yankees bullpen seems to be deteriorating right before our very eyes. Soriano is blowing games, Mo is blowing saves, and even worse, the Yankees have been in an offensive funk the past couple of games. I’d also like to note that I haven’t attended a Yankees loss at Yankee Stadium in almost two years, so I guess it was bound to happen.
I was lucky enough to get a seat in the 100’s right behind Nick Swisher in right, so I got to see firsthand the Yankees loss. A-Rod was robbed of an extra base hit in right, as was Cano’s line drive to end the game. Had Lillibridge been 5-10 more steps towards center field the Yankees would have walked off, again. I guess it just wasn’t in the cards last night, the Yankee gods feel that I have seen to many walk off wins in the past year.
In all seriousness though, will the real Rafael Soriano please stand up?
2010: 3-2, 1.73 ERA, 45 Saves, 14 BB, 57K, 4HR, and 1 HBP, 62.1 IP
2011: 1-1, 7.84 ERA, 1 SV (granted he’s a setup man now), 8 BB, 7K, 1 HR, 1 HBP, 10.1 IP
As you can see there is a major drop off there. He has already given up a quarter of the amount of home runs from last year, and his BB:K ratio so far this year is terrible. He gave up 14 walks ALL of last season (2 were intentional), and he already gave up 8 this year with no intentional walks. Could it be the park? Could it be the city? Could it be the fans? Although, it is still very early in the season, his numbers this year so far are jaw dropping and not in a good way. I hope for the sake of the Yankees he starts to step it up, and make that $35 million three-year contract worth it.
