No applause. Just opinions.

So here we are, the first subway series of the year is upon is.

New York Yankees vs New York Mets … The only time when New Yorker’s are pitted against each other (who am I kidding?) Well, I guess there is always Jets vs Giants, but that doesn’t happen every year (but it does so happen to be happening this year on Christmas Eve — if there is even a season.)

In any case onto the series at Yankee Stadium (II).

The Yankees are one game behind first place, and the Mets are five games behind first place. The Mets trip to the top has them bypassing three quality teams in the Braves, Marlins, and Phillies. The Yankees only have to bypass the Rays. Let’s just say this series won’t be putting TV ratings off the charts like years past in  my opinion. Let me tell you why.

The pitching matchups are pretty horrendous. Seriously who is interested in seeing R.A. Dickey and Freddy Garcia duel it out? Talk about a soft throwing duel. How about Chris Capuano versus AJ Burnett? Sure AJ has been a saving grace for the Yankees this season so far, but he is far from ace status. Some may view the third match up as the best of the three, with ‘big’ Mike Pelfrey taking the mound for the Mets and Ivan ‘Super’ Nova taking the mound for the Yanks. The New York Mets ace has a 5.11 ERA, talk about being good. Although these three pitchers for the Yankees have been pretty decent, they aren’t exactly mainstream names, whether they’re older, wild, or a rookie. The Mets are just abysmal and are starting to look like a Triple A team again with all their injuries.  Their money woes, and dropping attendance isn’t exactly helping morale, either.

I say the Yanks take the series, but not necessarily sweep, although it is highly possible with how the Yankees played last night. The Yankees have the Mets number when it comes to interleague play winning 45 out of 83 games (.542 winning %). Last year the Yanks and Mets split the season series at 3-3. The Yankees are 4-1 in the post season against the Mets, and that came in the 2000 World Series. The only thing that these two teams probably have in common at this point is the fact that they both have new stadiums (or fields depending on who you root for).

What are your thoughts on the series? Who takes it? What do you think about the match ups? Comments are welcome!
