No applause. Just opinions.

I am not a big fan of NCAA Football, probably because I only became an NFL fan later on in my life around 1999-2000. It is also probably because my Alma Mater did not have a football team. We used to walk around saying the corny line, “Undefeated since 1946!” In any case, College level football is in bad shape right now, and everyone is wondering, “What happened?!”

Here are a few examples of what I am talking about:

  • The USC Trojans were stripped of their title from 2004 due to players receiving illegal benefits.
  • Reggie Bush (former Trojan) forfeits his 2005 Heisman Trophy amid scandal at USC.
  • There was apparently a scandal with Auburn QB Cam Newton (another Heisman Trophy winner). It was claimed that his father tried to sell his son’s commitment to other schools, but nothing ever came of it.
  • The Fiesta bowl leader was found to be corrupt. Fiesta Bowl CEO was found to be using their money wrongly, giving illegal campaign contributions. Ultimately, the BCS threatened the Fiesta bowl that they will no longer be included in the BCS Championship, but ended up fining them one million dollars.
  • The Ohio State University had a group of players including star Quarterback Terelle Pryor suspended for several games at the beginning of the 2012 season. It was reported that they received improper benefits such as trading championship rings for tattoos and money. Amid all this scandal, Terelle Pryor decided it was best to leave Ohio State and attempt to enter the NFL via a supplemental draft.
  • The Ohio State University head football coach Jim Tressel knew about the prior stated infractions and did not do anything about it. Because of this OSU suspends Tressel for five games, and then he ultimately resigns (he actually did so before Pryor.)
  • This is news as of today — University of North Carolina received a notice of allegations from the NCAA. The allegations state, “unethical conduct by a former assistant coach as well as failure to adequately monitor the conduct of former and current players.” It also states that UNC failed to inform the NCAA adequately of violations, and even states that they attempted to mislead them by providing false information. The school has 90 days to respond to these allegations. Poor, poor Tar Heels.
College football is disintegrating, and it is quite unfortunate because the way things are going right now, it doesn’t look like we will have much of a professional football season either. What are your thoughts on the current situation of NCAA Football?

The BCS system doesn’t help. The lack of transparency+ clear favoritism doesn’t do well for cleaning up the sport.
