This topic has been beaten to death, but you all knew I had to post about it. I’ll try to keep it short.
Derek Jeter is the man. Here are some cool facts about his solo shot heard around the world:
- He is the only Yankee ever to hit 3,000. That’s right, Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, Mantle, etc. never achieved 3,000+ hits.
- He is only the second person ever to hit a home run for number 3,000. The other to do so was Wade Boggs; former Yankee and was a Devil Ray at the time when he hit #3,000. The Yankees were playing the Rays when the Captain hit 3,000.
- He is also only the second person to get five hits in the game where he hit 3,000. The other player to do this was actually the most recent 3,000 club inductee (besides Jeter, of course) – Craig Biggio. Jeter went 5 for 5, Biggio went 5 for 6.
- #2 Jeter hit #3,000 on his second hit at exactly 2:00PM EST.
- Jeter’s last home run at Yankee Stadium was almost a year before hit number 3,000. He hit an inside the parker on July 22, 2010. His last bomb over the fence was June 12, 2010. Talk about the rareness of seeing Jeter hitting #3,000 and it also being a home run.
I repeat, Derek Jeter is the man, and has a lot of weight taken off his shoulders now. I’d expect him to be a 300 hitter the rest of the season, and produce for the Yankees. Even prior to this event, he was a hall of famer, but this cements his place into Cooperstown.
What do you think?
