If you don’t know already, then you probably don’t watch sports news at all. Yesterday could have been quite possibly the craziest day in baseball history ever. Two different playoff contenders were decided in the last game of the season, game 162. Two other teams had some of the biggest collapses ever documented in MLB history.
The Boston Red Sox had a NINE game lead on the AL Wild Card on September 3rd. NINE GAMES with less than a month to play!!! The Atlanta Braves are almost just as bad. They led by EIGHT AND A HALF games on September 5th for the NL Wild Card. Going into game 162 of the season, both of these teams had dropped to a tie for the wild card; the Sox with the Rays, and the Braves with the Cardinals.
Needless to say, both teams crashed and burned. The Rays and the Cardinals bounced back and robbed the others of their playoff glory.
Is it just me, or did Scott Proctor serve up Evan Longoria’s walk off home run to clinch the wild card less than 5 minutes after the Red Sox blew it? Oh wait, that did happen. Rookie Craig Kimbrel blew the save for the Braves, and Tim Hudson’s gem. What a way to end your rookie season campaign.
I don’t know if there is a more exciting way to end the regular season. Who said baseball was boring?!
