The New York Mets are in dire straights right now, if you were not aware. Not only did the Mets make no ‘real’ splash in free agency this off season (which could be seen as a good move with the current events and you’ll see why), they are being sued for a TON of money. If you have been living under a rock, Bernie Madoff created the largest Ponzi scheme in U.S. history. The owners of the Mets are accused of knowing about this scheme, and failing to inform the proper authorities. They are being sued a whopping $300 million, and I have heard recently of a $1 Billion lawsuit. Yeah, that’s $1,300,000,000. Hey Jose, and David we’re going to need to reduce our payment to you the rest of your time with us, sorry. Oh, and fans, we’re going to need to charge you $200 for those bleacher seats. The Wilpon’s claim that they were victims like everybody else.
Now, the Mets are no stranger when it comes to money. Let us remember about their new stadium that was (originally) proudly named Citi Field. They didn’t seem to proud after the U.S. government had to bail out Citi bank for another large sum of money that none of us will ever make in our lifetime. Be rest assured though, if you pay taxes, you helped pay for that. Apparently there is a 20 year contract for that name, I guess William Shea is a lost memory. Also, let us remember the Mets are still the fifth highest paid team in all of baseball. I would have to imagine that they’ll drop down on that list in the next couple of years.
You know it’s bad when the owners are offering to sell a small portion of their team to whoever is willing to pay, meanwhile all the media outlets are claiming that they may have to sell the WHOLE team. How do you Mets fans feel about MLK III owning the team or even Mark Cuban? All of this is pretty recent news, and of course they’re allegations so it could turn in the Wilpon’s favor. I’m not a typical Yankees fan who hopes the Mets fail, trust me, a good sports team is great for the economy. I am most definitely in their corner, but it isn’t looking to good. Let me know what you think in your comments!
Pitchers and catchers report oh so soon.. And for the record I joined my first (of many) fantasy baseball leagues today. Let the games begin!
