Brandon Davies is a sinner. Or is he?

This is Brigham Young University’s honor code. Currently their NCAA basketball team is ranked number three in the whole country. This will most probably be changed due to this code.

They lost one of their star forwards, Brandon Davies, due to this honor code. I’m not going to knock this code at all. Let me tell you why.

Brigham Young University is owned by the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. If I were to apply to a college with that kind of affiliation, I would know what was expected of me. Religion comes first before anything else at a school like BYU, and I can respect that.

Brandon Davies admitted to having a sexual relation with his girlfriend. At any other non-religious school within the US, this would seem pretty normal during the college years. He followed the first line of the code, when he admitted it to his coach, but he failed to adhere to the second, and it is going to bite him, as well as BYU in the butt.

They won’t stay at number three, plain and simple. Jimmer Fredette is fantastic, but not fantastic enough to keep BYU in the mix for long. They actually lost yesterday to New Mexico. Yeah, and number three team (in the whole country) lost to the fifth place team in their own division. Yes, things like that within a division happen, but this is different. San Diego state will surely move atop them now, and the Cougars are one star less than they were a day ago.

Ultimately, Davies did the right thing by admitting to not honoring the BYU code. He did follow the code, almost. He made his choice, and now he has to live with it. Does that make him a bad person? Not necessarily. I bet he transfers. He actually kind of has to. In a school like Brigham Young University, he will always be looked down upon due to his decision, and his choice to share it.
